Palliative care in Northern Uganda, at your bedside.

From our clinic in Gulu, we ease pain at the clinic and at home, and we support the family through to bereavement.

Who it is for

For anyone living with a serious illness, and the family caring for them.

For example cancer, advanced HIV, heart failure, kidney failure or lung disease. It can start at diagnosis and run alongside treatment. It is not only for the last days of life.

What palliative care with us includes

  • Pain and symptom assessment and control
  • Home visits for patients too ill to travel
  • Emotional support for patients and families
  • Training family members to give care at home
  • Spiritual support, with the family's own faith leaders
  • Care for wounds and bed sores
  • Planning for the end of life, with counselling
  • Support for the family after a death

At home

Very sick people often cannot travel. So we visit them, and teach the family how to care between visits.

When hospital care is needed

For scans, surgery or cancer treatment, we refer you to the right hospital. When you come home, we pick up care again.

After a death

Our care does not stop at the funeral. We keep in touch with the family through bereavement.

Questions about palliative care

Is palliative care only for people who are dying?

No. Palliative care is for anyone with a serious illness, at any stage. Many people receive it for months or years, alongside treatment, to control pain and other symptoms.

Can I have palliative care during cancer treatment?

Yes. Palliative care works alongside treatment such as chemotherapy or surgery. It treats pain and side effects and supports the family, while the hospital treats the cancer.
